How it Started

Getting There

The eco-friendly energy starts from the moment visitors step off the plane. Heading out of LAX, travellers can hop on a short bus journey to the Los Angeles Union Station where they’ll be met with the Pacific Surfliner, an Amtrak® line servicing the SoCal region from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. Travellers can also hop aboard at San Diego’s Santa Fe Depot station and ride the rail north from there to Oceanside, keeping the ocean view journey effortless from every gateway.

Kitted with two-storey cabins and spacious seating for the perfect ‘coffee with a view’ experience, the Pacific Surfliner snakes along the coast, journeying direct to the Oceanside Transit Center, where travellers will alight just moments from its pristine stretch of white-sand coastline and bustling seaside environment.

Getting Around

Going car-free certainly doesn’t hinder visitors in-destination either. In fact, O’Side has it covered. First launched as a pilot program back in 2022, Oceanside’s GO’Side electric shuttles (pictured) operate at a $3 fare per passenger and serve the Downtown area, and a maximum of $6 for more than two passengers.

Requesting a ride through the Ride Circuit app, visitors can experience the buzz of Oceanside in hop-on, hop-off style, letting the ease of the day guide the journey. However, with many seaside hotspots within a well-walkable distance from the Oceanside Transit Center, with the city’s two flagship hotels: The Mission Pacific and The Seabird even just a short walk away, there’s every opportunity to slow down and soak it all in on foot, too.

Biking

From cruising the Strand to casual neighbourhood hopping, cycling or e-biking is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience the charm of Oceanside car-free. With the ocean breeze as the soundtrack, it transforms simple sightseeing into something immersive and low-impact.

Riders can follow the coast past the iconic Oceanside Pier, glide towards Oceanside Harbor for waterfront dining and boutique browsing, or head inland to the historic Mission San Luis Rey, often referred to as the “King of the Missions”, where 18^th Century architecture and peaceful gardens offer a quieter contrast to the beach buzz. The experience is made even more seamless thanks to local providers such as Wheel Fun Rentals and Mostly E-Bikes, both conveniently located near Downtown.

Dining Local

Oceanside’s sustainable mind extends far beyond its transport, and into everyday living. The city’s rising culinary scene is much devoted to sustainable and seasonal sourcing from local farms and producers, without compromising on refinement that serves the palate.

Restaurants like MICHELIN-starred Valle (above) serve Baja-inspired fine dining with a strong focus on locally and sustainably sourced seafood and produce. The restaurant has even installed its own water purification and mineralisation system, eliminating the need for bottled water and reducing plastic waste across the operation.

Meanwhile, The Plot, a 100% plant-based restaurant led by husband-and-wife duo Davin and Jessica Waite, has gained recognition for its zero-waste ethos and creative approach to plant-forward dining, living up to its motto “Feed the Evolution”. A similar ethos runs through Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub, also founded by the Waites. Here, sustainably sourced seafood takes centre stage, with chefs embracing lesser-known fish species and whole-ingredient cooking techniques that minimise waste while delivering inventive sushi and seafood dishes.
